Microbial genomics for de-risking offshore oil and gas exploration in Nova Scotia

September 26, 2019

Purpose and Goals: The purpose of the project is to develop, validate, and deploy different genomics-based bioassay tools for offshore prospecting on the Scotian Slope. The bioassays will be based on principles of microbial oceanography and ecology and focus on both bacteria that actively metabolise hydrocarbons in the seabed, as well as dormant bacteria (endospores of thermophiles) expelled from subsurface oil reservoirs via hydrocarbon seepage.

The Joggins Fossil locality – its importance for understanding oil and gas formation and what that means for Nova Scotia’s geologic past

February 21, 2019

The majestic fossil-rich cliffs of Joggins, Nova Scotia is host to Paleozoic aged peat mires, lakes, and rivers systems. The remains of the plants and animals that were living in these environments have been preserved as organic-rich shales and coal seams.

The Search for Sand: Mountains, Rivers and Deltas 150 Million Years Ago

January 10, 2019

Most oil and gas in the offshore Scotian Basin is trapped in deeply buried sandstones that accumulated 160–100 million years ago. These sandstones formed from sand transported by ancient rivers to large deltas on the Scotian Shelf. Understanding where these rivers were located in the ancient landscape and what sort of sand they carried to the sea helps to locate the sandstone reservoirs in which petroleum can accumulate. The types of minerals in the sands influence the porosity of the sandstone reservoirs.
