Assessing the Business Case for Deep Well Geothermal in Nova Scotia

Dunsky Energy + Climate Advisors, in partnership with SQGI and Enki, conducted modelling and analysis to better understand the potential for direct deep geothermal in Nova Scotia.

The project used geological analysis from a previous study and focused on the costs and opportunities for developing geothermal resources in the province. Case study modelling was done using SQGI's geo-economic model and was supported by Dunsky’s heat pump alternative scenarios (using data from its heating electrification adoption model).  As part of this work, Dunsky characterized three end-use archetypes (greenhouse, aquaculture facility, and district energy system) and explored the business case for deep well geothermal relative to the status quo and a closed-loop geothermal system. Three geological regions for the application of deep geothermal were assessed (Cumberland Basin, Stellarton Basin, and Windsor-Kennetcook Basin).

Our presentation is geared toward policymakers and industry leaders and will provide an overview of the modelling approach and explore the results of our analysis. The presentation will translate complex modeling results (including sensitivity analysis) into insights and recommendations regarding the technical and financial suitability of deep geothermal for specific applications in the regions assessed.
