Assessment of Clean Growth Opportunities in Nova Scotia
December 2020 – March 2021
Under the Sustainable Development Goals Act, Nova Scotia has legislated a net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emission economy by 2050. To achieve this important milestone a portfolio of decarbonization strategies will be adopted by the private and public sectors.
Stimulating Offshore Wind Development in Nova Scotia
January – March 2021
To attract Offshore Wind (OSW) investment to Nova Scotia, it is important to understand the development in other jurisdictions. For example, Europe has developed, and the USA are developing, an active OSW industry encompassing the entire OSW supply chain.
Net-Zero Future: A Feasibility Study of Hydrogen Production, Storage, Distribution and Use in The Maritimes - NL Extension
January – March 2021
This study investigated what role hydrogen can play in Newfoundland and Labrador’s future energy system.

Microbial Genomics for De-Risking Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration in Nova Scotia
April 2016 – March 2021
The purpose of this $6.5M project is to develop, validate and deploy different genomics-based bioassay tools for offshore prospecting on the Scotian Slope.

Sequence stratigraphy, titania diagenesis and relationship to petroleum systems modeling
October 2018 – January 2021
This project examines different forms of titania (TiO2) minerals to confirm the relationship between late diagenetic titania (i.e., titania minerals transformed under the heat and pressure of sedimentary processes) and hydrocarbon migration and thus assess the use of titania polymorphs as “pathfi
Turbulence Dissipation Rates from Horizontal Velocity Profiles at Mid-Depth in Fast Tidal Flows
December 2017
This study characterizes the turbulence in a tidal channel in the Bay of Fundy that has been identified for development as a tidal power resource.

Mid Cretaceous Sand Supply to Offshore SW Nova Scotia: Tectonic Diversion of Labrador Rivers during Naskapi Member Deposition
September 2015 – September 2017
This study tests the hypothesis that tectonic diversion of Labrador rivers during the Aptian resulted in sand supply through the Bay of Fundy to the Shelburne sub-basin, allowing shales to accumulate farther east in the Scotian Basin.

Source Rock and Geochemistry of the Central Atlantic Margins
September 2014 – August 2017
This project evaluates known, probable and possible source rocks in the Nova Scotia shelf and deep water offshore areas with an emphasis On the Triassic– Jurassic time interval.
Going with the Flow: Advancement of Drifting Platforms for use in Tidal Energy Site Assessment & Environmental Monitoring
April 2015 – August 2017
This research project aimed to apply a simple and low cost philosophy to ocean observation by developing an inexpensive low-profile surface drifter for use in initial assessment of potential tidal energy development opportunities. The project addressed limitations in the existing drifter design
Drones and Drifters – The Great Pumpkin Race
October 2016 – July 2017
This project tested and developed a new low-cost approach to collecting oceanographic measurements for use in tidal initial site assessments. The plan combines one of the oldest tools in oceanography, the drifter, with one of the newest, the drone.
