Testing of a New Turbine Blade Design and Blade Materials
July 2018 – May 2019
There’s not yet a standardized, optimal way of extracting power from tidal currents. That’s why many tidal industry technologies are currently being tested around the world.
Remote Acoustic Measurements of Turbulence in High-Flow Tidal Channels during High Wave Conditions
April 2018 – April 2019
Many of the high-flow tidal channels targeted for worldwide in-stream hydro-electric development are impacted by surface gravity waves incident from a large exterior basin (e.g. the Bay of Fundy/Gulf of Maine/North Atlantic).

Georges Bank Research & Data
January 2019
Georges Bank is a large submarine bank (250km by 150km – 40,000 km2) located at the edge of the Atlantic continental shelf between Cape Cod and Nova Scotia.
Drones and Drifters – The Great Pumpkin Race
October 2016 – July 2017
This project tested and developed a new low-cost approach to collecting oceanographic measurements for use in tidal initial site assessments. The plan combines one of the oldest tools in oceanography, the drifter, with one of the newest, the drone.
Advancing Tidal Energy Turbine Operations through High Fidelity Tug Propulsion and Control Simulation Software
November 2016 – March 2017
The project objective was to develop a numerical model of a tug boat and its propulsion system to accurately predict its dynamic behaviour in turbulent tidal flows.

Test Snow Crab Response to Seismic Stress
February 2012 – September 2013
There is concern in Atlantic Canada that there is insufficient information on the potential effects of seismic noise on snow crab.
Turbulence and Drag in a High Reynolds Number Tidal Passage Targeted for In-Stream Tidal Power
August 2013
Results are presented from an investigation of turbulence and bottom drag carried out in Grand Passage, lower Bay of Fundy.
Southwest Nova Scotia Tidal Energy Resource Assessment
June 2013
This is an assessment of the in-stream tidal resources in Southwest Nova Scotia consisting of Shelburne, Yarmouth and Digby Counties.
Marine Renewable Energy: Background Report To Support a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) for the Cape Breton Coastal Region, inclusive of the Bras D’Or Lakes
June – December 2012
In 2011 following a competitive request for proposal process, OERA commissioned AECOM’s Halifax office to undertake a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) for marine renewable energy in Cape Breton.
