Science and Socio-economic Review of the Georges Bank Prohibition Area 2020-2021
June – December 2021
Georges Bank is a large submarine platform located at the edge of the Atlantic continental shelf between Cape Cod and Nova Scotia. The Georges Bank Prohibition Area covers a significant portion of Georges Bank and is located on the Canadian side of the Canada-United States maritime boundary.
The Vectron2 Project: Turbulence Measurements for the In-stream Tidal Energy Industry
March 2019 – November 2021
The Vectron is a new sensor used for measuring turbulence velocity within a tidal turbine’s swept area. The Vectron has been successfully prototyped, where next steps are to take the technology to the ‘industry-ready’ stage of development and the focus of this project.
Assessment of Clean Growth Opportunities in Nova Scotia
December 2020 – March 2021
Under the Sustainable Development Goals Act, Nova Scotia has legislated a net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emission economy by 2050. To achieve this important milestone a portfolio of decarbonization strategies will be adopted by the private and public sectors.
Going with the Flow II: Using Drifters to Address Uncertainties in the Spatial Variation of Tidal Flows
October 2017 – June 2018
Drifters are one of the oldest, simplest and most reliable methods for measuring ocean currents. Drifters also provide a simple, low risk platform from which to gather acoustic information along flow streamlines or ‘drift tracks’.
Nova Scotia Small Tidal Test Centre: Gap Analysis and Business Case
November 2017 – March 2018
As the tidal energy industry develops, there is increasing interest in the prospects for small-scale tidal energy development. Building small-scale tidal energy installations has promise given the number of locations where they can be used.
Geoscience » Play Fairway Analyses Atlases 2010–Present
Laurentian Sub-Basin Atlas (2014)
January – December 2014
This project assesses the petroleum system of the Laurentian sub-basin bidding block and surrounding areas.
Testing of Temporal Monitoring Techniques for Benthic Habitat Impacts of Tidal Energy Developments
September 2011 – November 2014
This project tested and developed monitoring procedures for assessing the impact of the placement of in-stream tidal devices (e.g. turbines, cables and other seafloor hardware) on the seafloor environment.
Implications of Tidal Energy Extraction on Sedimentary Processes within Shallow Intertidal Environments
September 2011 – April 2014
This project assessed the implications of tidal energy extraction on sedimentary processes within shallow inter-tidal ecosystems.

Test Snow Crab Response to Seismic Stress
February 2012 – September 2013
There is concern in Atlantic Canada that there is insufficient information on the potential effects of seismic noise on snow crab.
Turbulence and Drag in a High Reynolds Number Tidal Passage Targeted for In-Stream Tidal Power
August 2013
Results are presented from an investigation of turbulence and bottom drag carried out in Grand Passage, lower Bay of Fundy.
