Paleogeographic Reconstruction and Source Rock De-Risking, Offshore Nova Scotia
February – November 2020
In this project GeoArctic modeled the tectonic evolution of the northern Central Atlantic to re-evaluate the syn-rift and early post-rift geological context of sedimentary basin formation.

Predictive Modeling of Sandstone Reservoir Distribution in the SW Scotian Basin
March 2018 – April 2020
The SW Scotian Basin is considered an under-explored passive margin sedimentary basin, however, it is also the most probable location to find oil on the Scotian Margin.
Multi-Scale Turbulence Measurement in the Aquatron Laboratory
July 2018 – July 2019
This project has two primary objectives - to characterize the flow and turbulence in the Aquatron facility pool tank using turbulence sensors calibrated against a traceable standard; and to test technologies for investigating the horizontal variability of turbulence in real-world tidal channels.

Nova Scotia-Morocco Conjugate Biostratigraphy Project
September 2018 – June 2019
Biostratigraphy, the study of fossils to determine the age and depositional conditions of the sediments from which they are recovered, is a critical input to the seismic reconstruction of the Nova Scotia and Morocco margins. Detailed biostratigraphical analyses have been completed by an internat
Remote Acoustic Measurements of Turbulence in High-Flow Tidal Channels during High Wave Conditions
April 2018 – April 2019
Many of the high-flow tidal channels targeted for worldwide in-stream hydro-electric development are impacted by surface gravity waves incident from a large exterior basin (e.g. the Bay of Fundy/Gulf of Maine/North Atlantic).

Predictive Modelling of Sandstone Reservoir Quality in the Scotian Basin
May 2016 – December 2018
This project uses existing knowledge of inferred drainage basin areas and paleoclimate to model multiple river inputs to the Scotian Basin. The modelled sedimentary succession is compared with actual sediment thicknesses in the basin.

Advanced Coastal Mapping to Support Hydrodynamic Modelling
April 2016 – June 2018
Nova Scotia’s Atlantic coast exhibits a variety of shorelines that may be vulnerable to contamination in the event of an offshore oil spill. In turn, variable currents, changing water levels, shoals, and exposed seaside conditions make effective spill response difficult for tidal inlets.
Tidal Energy: Strategic Environmental Assessment – Bay of Fundy (Phase I)
April 2018
This Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) provides advice on whether, when and under what conditions tidal energy demonstration and commercial projects should be allowed in the Bay of Fundy.
Drones and Drifters – The Great Pumpkin Race
October 2016 – July 2017
This project tested and developed a new low-cost approach to collecting oceanographic measurements for use in tidal initial site assessments. The plan combines one of the oldest tools in oceanography, the drifter, with one of the newest, the drone.
